MIDI Clock

Sync your lighting with music tempo

DMXDesktop can receive MIDI Clock from external apps or devices, allowing your lighting to stay in sync with your music. (As of version 1.0.29)

1. Connect a Compatible MIDI Device

Plug in a USB MIDI device that can send MIDI Clock. Most DJ and music production software supports this.

2. Using Multiple Inputs or Virtual MIDI

If you're using multiple devices or want to route MIDI virtually, tools like the following can help:

  • loopMIDI – Create virtual MIDI ports
  • MIDI-OX – Merge or monitor MIDI messages

Please note: These tools are not developed or endorsed by DMXDesktop. We are not responsible for their use, and their own terms and conditions apply.

3. Enable MIDI Clock in DMXDesktop

  • Open Settings → MIDI
  • Enable the "Enable MIDI Clock" option

Important: This cannot be used at the same time as Ableton Link, OS2L, or Direct Audio BPM detection. If those services are active, enabling MIDI Clock will disable them.

4. Start Sending MIDI Clock

Once enabled, start playback or tempo sync from your external app or device. DMXDesktop will begin tracking the BPM from incoming MIDI Clock messages.

Compatible Software and Tools

The following software and tools are known to send MIDI Clock:

  • Ableton Live – Very stable and accurate
  • FL Studio – Good timing via MIDI Out settings
  • VirtualDJ – Works well, can be enabled in settings
  • Mixxx – Open-source, supports both MIDI Clock and Link
  • Bitwig Studio – Accurate and consistent
  • Traktor Pro – Supported, but may send an unstable or fast clock
  • MIDI hardware (drum machines, sequencers) – Many devices send stable clock signals
⚠️ Some applications (like Traktor) may send inaccurate or jittery MIDI Clock. For best results, test and verify clock accuracy before using live.
🌐 If you're using virtual MIDI over a network (like rtpMIDI), be aware that network latency or jitter may affect timing.
